Meet Bernie, the newest member of our family. He is a ~2 year old Bichon Poodle mix with short little legs and a incredibly sweet personality. We brought him home from the shelter on Saturday, and I am happy to report that despite some understandable anxiety from all the change, he is adjusting very well to his new home!
I’d spent months searching Petfinder almost every day for a dog that would be a good fit for us. When we took Sophie to meet Bernie at the shelter, there was no question he was the dog for us. They hit it off immediately.
On the way home, we stopped at one of the self service dog wash places because he was disgusting from the shelter. I knew it would cause him stress, but he really needed to be cleaned up.
Once we got home, he promptly made himself comfortable demanding belly rubs and staking out his own spot on the couch. He and Sophie also spent a large part of the weekend running around in the muddy back yard together. Needless to say they both need a bath, but I’m going to hold off on putting him through that again.
On Sunday we took him to our vet for a full check up and some piece of mind. She assured us he is healthy, if in need of some TLC, and now we are just trying to make his adjustment to our home as smooth as possible. He gets anxiety if we go upstairs without him, and he will not let me anywhere near him with a body harness. Hopefully with some time and a whole lot of love, he will start to trust us and the nervousness will subside.
